Couching Gold Embroidery: Four-Armed Avalokiteshvara

盘金绣·四臂观音

  • Dimensions: 75 cm × 75 cm
  • Materials: Silk, gold threads, silk threads, thangka pigments
  • Year of Creation: 2009

The Four-Armed Avalokiteshvara, known in Tibetan as "Chenrezig," is revered as the guardian deity of snowy Tibet. In this serene depiction, Avalokiteshvara appears with one head and four arms, the body pure and white as the moon, adorned with a five-Buddha crown and black hair tied in a topknot. The central pair of hands are pressed together in front of the chest, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel. The right hand holds a crystal rosary, while the left gently lifts an eight-petaled lotus at ear level. Her face is tranquil and smiling. Graceful floral motifs and vines embellish her form as she sits in full lotus posture upon a radiant moon disk, emanating brilliant multi-colored light. Symbolizing infinite compassion and the wish to relieve suffering, Avalokiteshvara is of great importance in Tibetan Buddhism and is one of the most beloved Bodhisattvas among the Tibetan people, believed to help fulfill wishes and realize ideals.

This work was awarded the Gold Prize at the 6th Sichuan Provincial Ethnic Minority Arts Festival.
